From Imagination, to the Screen, to the Students
Do You Want to Learn What Digital Storytelling Is?
Holaa again!
Here I am. Today's topic is digital storytelling. We are going to be talking about a lot of things related to it. As a future English teacher, this digital storytelling assessment helped me realize that it is actually necessary and that teachers should use it, especially in language classes. So, what is digital storytelling?
Digital storytelling is simply telling a story using multimedia elements such as images, audio, text, and narration. It is also considered a type of educational video.
Why Does It Play a Crucial Role in the Classroom?
We are living in the 21st century, and everything is constantly changing. To be a well-equipped educator who keeps up with technology and educational developments, teachers should find innovative ways to teach their lessons by integrating technology into their classes. Digital storytelling is a great way to get students' attention and evoke emotions.
Teachers should know alternative ways to make lessons more enjoyable. Simply having students read and write is not enough to improve their other skills. Teachers must incorporate technological tools that align with their teaching methods. Unfortunately, many teachers are unaware of the methods they use or how to integrate technology into their lessons. They need to learn about 21st century skills to improve themselves and keep up with the current demands of the world.
How to Create a Digital Story?
There are some steps you need to follow. You should combine your story with several elements. The topic, music, images, characters, flow, point of view, and the dramatic question are all important parts.
First, you need to decide what kind of story you want to tell. It can be personal or fictional story. Then, you use your creativity to come up with powerful ideas. After that, you can create your characters and design the setting while incorporating multimedia.
My Digital Storytelling Experience
I chose a fictional story and collaborated with my friends Zinnur and Nehir. We had a lot of fun, by the way! You can visit their blogs by clicking their names. We used Pixton to create the characters and Canva to edit the story. The process was not really easy. We had to think over the content and find a compelling story. After deciding on the plot, we started designing our characters in Pixton. There are many characters you can edit, but the only problem is the limitation on creating scenes. Other than that, Pixton made the process easier with its variety of items, and backgrounds. After all, we edited everything in Canva which is one of the best and easiest to use. I highly recommend you to use it.
We recorded our voices, arranged the background music, added text, edited the story, and uploaded it to YouTube. I will definitely use this kind of assignment with my students in the future because it encourages students to think creatively and take ownership of their work. It also helps them think critically and connect with technology in education.
What Was Our Purpose in Creating a Digital Story?
Our digital story is about an earthquake. I think it is important to remind everyone that earthquakes are a serious issue that we need to talk about. A recent earthquake occurred in Istanbul. So, we wanted to raise awareness among children. We decided to adapt the classic story of Rapunzel to the present day and reflect today's realities to the students in an ironic way. ✨
Here is our digital story about Rapunzel and the earthquake. I hope you like it! ❤️
Don't forget to leave a comment, my dear amigos! 💗✔️
